Whenever I dye I always leave it on for about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how light or dark my hair is. If it’s permanent dye (the kind that you need to mix developer/oxidizing lotion with), the longer you leave it on the longer it damages your hair. If it’s semi-permanent (no developer, like Manic Panic or Directions), then it’s safe to leave it on even overnight.
